"Our picture of our 19th century ancestors is of a people who were born, lived and died in the same small shtetl. While some certainly fit that picture, they were much more diverse. Historians tell us that there was much migration within the
Russian Empire even before the great emigration that began in the 1880s. Generally, the migration was economically (and sometimes governmentally) motivated, and tended to be from rural to town to city, and from north to south, especially as the south (comparatively) boomed in the last half of the century. The size of families were so large that it was unlikely that all the off springs could earn a living from the family business. If the business involved a skill, one might be better advised to establish it elsewhere rather than to compete with one's father or siblings. In addition, anyone with rabbinic or scholarly ambitions had to travel, as the custom was to study with great rabbis or attend one of the few extant Yeshivas, or both. Finally, there was the marriage custom of the parents of both the groom and the bride giving the young couple gifts of roughly equal value, which often included lodging them for a period of time in the bride's then the groom's family home. For a couple with homes in different towns, this meant that it was not automatic that the couple would settle in the bride's town, the groom's town, or strike out for a third (neutral) locale." From a posting by Bert Lazerow lazer@usd.edu on LitvakSIG Digest Though Len Yodaiken' s article "Methodology for Researching 18th Century Lithuania" is pointed (and rightly so) to his own family research, much can be learned from his experience and I would heartily recommend that any Lithuanian Jewish researchers read the article printed in Avotaynu Volume XX, Number 3 Fall 2004 issue. |
Some Shtetls were in more than one Uyezd as
administrative districts changed over time, so don't get confused if you
thought your Shtetl was in another Uyezd; it may very well have been in that
Uyezd too. Here is a list of Lithuanian Guberniyas

Note: Shtetls that are a part of the Lida District Research Group Project of JewishGen's ShtetLinks, have LDRG next to their names. Places that are a part of the Raseiniai District Research Group Project have RDRG next to their names.

Howard Margol contacted Galina Baranova, chief Archivist in the Historical Archive in Vilnius (LVIA) and the following is her reply:
"Registration place is the place (Jewish community) in which the family was registered. Even if the family, or an individual, lived a long time in some other place we can find information about the family in revision or Family Lists for registration place, but not for living place. I can not state the same about other records.
Question: If a person was looking for a birth record would they look where they were born or where they were registered? Galina's response: We shall look for the birth record according to the birthplace of the person, not to his living place (of course if there is difference between birthplace and living place in Census lists). Question: What about other records, such as death records, property records, tax records, etc.? Galina's response: The death record will be registered in the place where the person died or was buried. It does not depend on his birthplace, registration place and sometimes on his living place. The death place is in the living place of person very often, but ... Property records have to be in the place where the person had his property, such as tax records, etc. Of course it is the person's living place also, but sometimes people moved to other place and retained ownership of the property where they previously lived." "In the final analysis, our ancestors were more mobile than we thought. Don't expect to find all of your ancestors records in one place. You may have to look in several places. From a posting by Howard Margol |
BTW, no shtetls (towns) have been wiped
out during the Holocaust. This is a common misconception about the destroyed Jewish communities according to well known and respected genealogist Alexander Sharon.
The Lithuanian State Historical Archives keeps the vital (birth, marriage and death) records of the different Jewish communities of Lithuania, dating up to 1915. The Archives keeps the birth records 1856, 1860, 1863-1867, 1869, 1872-1875, 1877, 1889-1893, 1895-1914; the marriage records 1854, 1861,1863 - 1863-1865, 1868, 1873, 1874, 1877, 1881, 1884-1890, 1892-1914 and the death records 1855, 1860, 1861, 1864 1865, 1867, 1870-1875,1877, 1883-1887, 1889-1894, 1896, 1898, 1900, 1903-1905, 1908, 1910-1912, 1914 of Merkine Jewish Community. Alvitas
(Alytus, Olita, Alite) Located south of
Kovno (62 Kilometers SSW), about 60-70 km from Vilnius, and is part of
Trakai District. It is divided into two parts by the Neman river. One part once belonged to
Poland and the other to Lithuania or Russian Empire, depending upon the year. In
Yiddish it was known as Alite - 'Litvishe Alite and Polishe Alite'. Two hundred and seventy nine Jews were murdered here at the beginning of WW II The town goes back to the Neolithic age, and historically included lands on the left bank of the Nemaunas, which runs roughly north/south in the area. After the 1795 partition of what was left of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Alytus was divided in half, with the right (eastern) part of the town (Alytus I, was assigned to Russia) and the left (western part of the town, Alytus II), left in Prussian hands for 12 years. Napoleon Bonaparte assigned it to the Duchy of Warsaw in 1807 and in 1815, it became part of the Kingdom of Poland, a Russian protectorate. The 1831 Polish uprising resulted in the elimination of the Polish State, and incorporation of all Polish lands into the Russian Empire. Alytus II was assigned to the
Guberniya of Augustow beginning in 1837 (Alytus I was assigned to the
Vilnius Guberniya) and to Suwalki beginning in 1867. This situation of two separate towns persisted until
Lithuanian independence in 1918, when they were reunited. The Jewish vital records are very plentiful and well documented. Those from the "Polish" side (in Kalvarija District of Suwalk Guberniya of the Kingdom of Poland of the Russian Empire) are at the
Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius, and some marriage records are at the Polish State Archives branch in Suwalki. The 1835-1865 marriages at the Suwalki Archives were microfilmed by the Mormons and extracted and transcribed by them -- the full extracts were published in 1992 in "Landsmen", the quarterly journal of the Suwalki-Lomza SIG http://www.jewishgen.org/SuwalkLomza Records from the "Russian" side (in Troki District of Vilna Guberniya of the Russian Empire), the Jewish Vital Records of 1852-1914 are at the
Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius. Harold Rhode and Sallyann Sacks "Jewish Vital Records, Revision Lists and other Jewish Holdings in the Lithuanian Archives" devotes nearly three full pages to the inventory of the Alytus Jewish Vital Records. They are plentiful and are available in the
Lithuanian Central Civil Register Archives (Lietuvos Centrinis Metriku Archyvas) in Vilnius. See Avotaynu XIV:1 (Spring 1998), pp. 21-24. http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/alytus/alite.html A detailed study of the Olita Marriage Records were published under the title "Some Problems in Researching Eastern European Records" in Avotaynu IX:3 (Fall 1993), pp. 12-13 - authored by Boris Feldblyum and Yakov Shadevich. Names of Jewish contributors from
Olita can be found in HaMagid: Volume 11 (Supplement), Page 15, 3/15/1871 and Volume 6 (Supplement), p. 70, 2/7/1872 The

Aukstadvaris Part of the
Trakai District: After the Partitions of Poland in 1795, the area was annexed by
Imperial Russia. In 1915, during the World War I, the area was captured by
Germany. After the war, the town became a part of Lithuania and was occupied by Poland. The works in the Upper castle were almost complete in 1939, when the
Polish Defensive War started and the area was soon annexed by the Soviet Union and then by
Nazi Germany. During the war, more than 5000 Jews from the Trakai region were murdered by the Nazis. In 1944, during
Operation Tempest, the town was liberated by joint forces of the Polish Home Army and
Soviet partisans. After World War II it was again annexed by the Soviets. Among the towns in the

(Birz, Birzh, Birzhai,

This was a district capital near the Latvian border, on the banks of the Amalna and Afushta rivers. There is a photo of the shoemaker's synagogue in
Birzai in Volume II of the encyclopedia Judaica. It was also known as
Birsen in German and Birzhi in Russian and was part of the
Kovno government until 1920. Birzai Internal Passport Records are available, but according to Howard Margol, Homargol@aol.com, a minimum of a $100 contribution to the LitvakSIG organization is required. The Lithuanian Archives contain hundreds of thousands of police and court records. However, they are not indexed and are filed only by date. In order for the archivist to find a police or court record, you must know the location, the event and the exact date. With the information from this Internal Passport record, the police report can probably be found. http://www.itvaksig.org The

Eishyshok This is a small Jewish market town. In September 1941, the Germans killed almost 5,000 Jews. A few survived by hiding in the area including Yaffa Eliach who created the
Tower of Life at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D. C. - a soaring display made up of 1,500 photographs depicting the people of Eishyshok. She spent over 17 years documenting the life of the town's Jews, pouring over diaries, letters and birth and marriage certificates to create the monumental tribute to the lost world of Eishyshok.

Kaunas
(Kovno) A large city, but also a
Uyezd consisting of eight Uyezds (counties).
It served as the capital of independent Lithuania between the great wars.
It has today, a Jewish community of some 500-600 Jews with a Shul that is
still functioning. It stands out as the place of some of the
Holocaust's most brutal events; the liquidation of the Jewish community of
Kovno (and many other places) is commemorated by monuments and exhibits in
the tsarist-era fortress at which thousands of Jews were shot to death.
Those
Lithuanians who helped murder Jews are described as Nazis (presumably
Germans) and their "Mithelfers", the standard euphemism for
Lithuanian collaborators. "The
Destruction of Jewish Kovno" - (Umkum fun der Yiddisher Kovne") In the first days of WW II, the
Lithuanian ruffians calling themselves partisans, caught thousands of Jews in the streets of the city and imprisoned them in the
Seventh Fort near Kovno (Kaunas).
"From Here To Kovno" - a documentary film, Search for grandfather's House Leads to Family Revelations - authored by Susan Josephs Staff Writer, The Jewish Week and published in the
LitvakSIG Journal of March, 2001 http://www.jewishgen.org/Litvak/journal.htm
"How I survived The Kovno Ghetto" by Ephraim Romm - an article http://www.aish.com/holocaust/people/How_I_Survived_the_Kovno_Ghetto.asp
"Kaunas Guberniya Jews Expelled from Riga" - the Siauliai District Research Group has distributed a list of 540 records dated 1895 showing
Kaunas Guberniya Jews expelled from Riga.
"Kovno Ghetto Diary" - authored by Meir Yellin & Dimitri Gelpern, in Moscow, State Publishing House, "Der Emes", 1948 (Yiddish, 214 pages) translated into English by Chaim Bargman and Robin O'Neil as a reliable source of research the History of Resistance in the Kovno Ghetto - "the readers of this book should know that it was published during the so called BLACK YEARS in USSR when almost every word, phrases and comment were strictly censored, changed or distorted. "The
Litvaks - A Short History of the Jews in Lithuania" - published in

"My Grandfather's House" - traces the search for the house that the author's grandfather lived in in Kovno before coming to America in 1911. It is a film documentary by Eileen Douglas and Ron Steinman All that I (Dov Levin) realized already in 1961 during the preparation to publish together with the late Prof. Zvi A. Brown or our book "The
Story of an Underground - The Resistance of Jews of Kovno in the Second World War", Jerusalem Yad Vashem 1962, (Hebrew, 422 pages." as attributed to Prof. Dov Levin in a JewishGen posting on 12/14/01 http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/translations.html "Surviving the Holocaust: The Kovno Ghetto Diary" - authored by Avraham Tory. This diary remains an important chronicle of 3 years of murderous Nazi rule which was used as evidence in war crimes trials. Mr. Tory died at his home in Tel Aviv on 2-24-2003, at the age of 92. He was born in 1909 in
Lazdijai. His father, Zorach, had graduated from Volohyzhin Yeshiva, took Simchas but never practiced as a rabbi. He adopted the name Tory in 1950 after arriving in Israel.

Kupiskis District - the area encompassed a thick forest of mostly pine woods located in the Simoniu and Zalioni Forest tracts and many homes were generally made of wood with dirt floors. The district includes these villages:
During the summer of 1941, more than 1,000 Jewish men, women and children - about one-fourth of
Kupishki's population were murdered by men under Werner Loew, a Nazi appointed mayor and police commander assigned to this town.
Kupiskis, known in
Yiddish as Kupishok, was home to 1,444 Jews before World War II. Today no Jews live in
Kupishok. Amazingly, however, there are nearly 60 people around the world researching their Jewish ancestors from this small
Lithuanian town. Most of them are listed in the JewishGen Family Finder
Box Tax Payer Lists http://www.jewishgen.org/litvak/html/vital-p4.htm
The Kupiskis, Lithuania ShtetLinks site has been updated including the
Cemetery records as well as a new section for Kupiskis Cemetery Records. Additionally, there is now a
Kupiskis family photo gallery. These photos are arranged by family and new photos will be added in time. http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kupiskis/kupishok.htm In the 16-17th Centuries,
Kupiskis District which includes the villages of Alizava,
Geleziai, Kupiskis, Noriunai, Simonys, Skapiskis, and Subacius, was surrounded by thick forest of mostly pine woods located in the Simoniu and Zalioni Forest tracts. As wood was plentiful, homes were generally made of wood with dirt floors. In the late 19th and early 20th Century, there were three mills in
Kupiskis, one of which was for the processing of wood products. This mill was owned by the
Smidt family and the building remains today. Also, prior to the Holocaust, one of the large forestry areas adjacent to
Kupiskis was run by a Jew who was forced to flee during the Holocaust. It is not known whether he managed to escape. In modern
Kupiskis, there are several lumber companies that process wood products, including one from
Oregon in the U.S. - "Ochoco Lumber Company". Also a popular export is peat which extraction began in 1936 and is taken from the Sepeta Peat Bog which is 4.5 km southeast of
Kupiskis and contains 776.7 hectares and the Aliai Peat bog in
Svencioniai. Many of the wood or peat products are exported to other countries including
Israel. From a posting by Ann Rabinowitz http://www.jewishgen.org/litvak/all.htm

Myadel
Prior to the
First Partition of Poland, all records and documents were written in
Polish (thus, Miadziol or Miadziel) The Grand Duchy of Lithuania Records of 1784 were written in
Polish but records after that date were written in Russian
(thus in the Revision Lists of 1811 the spellings were Miadel and Miadelai). In
Yiddish one hears Mah-del. In the Myadel area many languages formed the base of understanding:
Lithuanian, Polish, Hebrew, Yiddish, Belarusian and Russian. Although for residents of
Myadel, Belarusian is currently the native language, the current, and only legal language, in
Myadel is Russian. There is a lot of information at the Myadel web page at http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Myadel/

Naishtot
(Neustadt, Neustadt-Schirwindt, Vladislavov) New city or new town and is located 57 kilometers (97 miles)
West of Vilnius (Vilna) and about 10 miles NW of Vilkaviskis, very close to
Lithuania's West border. Naishtot, Lithuania (Kudirkos-Naumiestis) was known as
Wladislawow while Polish. This town was the county seat of Vladislavov Uyezd (Wladyslawow Powiat), one of the seven districts of
Suwalk Guberniya. Suwalk Guberniya was in the
Kingdom of Poland -- there were no revisions done in the Kingdom of Poland, therefore there were never any revision lists. The
Kingdom of Poland had its own legal and administrative system, based on the Napoleonic code, which was a different system than that used in the
Russian Pale of settlement (Kovno Guberniya, Vilna Guberniya, etc.) http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Naishtot/naishtot.html

Paneriu
(Ponary, Paneriai ) A forest that is located south of
Vilna. Jews were shot and buried in a series of 12 stone-lined pits that the Russians had built to be used to store petroleum originally. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/lithuania/vilnius/paneriai http://www.noarfamily.net/PONARYFOREST.html There is a memorial, but no list of names. 70,000 Jews were murdered here. Some survivors know the names of their family members who were murdered there, but no one has ever seen, or heard, of an official list. A Jew, living near the pits, made a record of the number of Jews brought to the pits each day until he was finally murdered. The record he created was discovered years later buried in the ground in bottles. However, it contained only numbers, no names. Panevezys
(Ponavesh,
Paneves, Ponevezh, Panevezhys)
Paneves is quite a big town, and like many
others in Lithuania, noted for the bulldozing of its Jewish cemetery by the
Russians, who used the broken up tombstones as building material in the
construction of a theatre, many of the Hebrew inscriptions still visible on
fragments of the granite.
Jews knew this city as Ponevezh and it
housed an important Yeshiva. After WW II, the Yeshiva became a bakery. A
transplant of that Yeshiva exists today in Israel. The Jewish
cemetery was destroyed.

Pasvitinys (Pasvetin)
The road into
Pasvetin is unpaved. It is a small town, in a rural setting,
surrounded by farms. The main street ends after a couple of
hundred yards in the small square, with the church on the northern side.
There are a few brick houses around the square, possibly inhabited at one
time by Jews, whereas most buildings, as in most towns, are of wood.
Total population before WW II was about 1,000 with about 100 Jews.
There was a wooden shul, but a few days before he German invasion in 1941,
there was a massive fire in the town, started accidentally by some school
children, which destroyed most of the buildings, including the shul.
There is/was a Jewish cemetery about a mile outside the town.
The Germans put
all the Jews in town in the brick school building and later took them to
Joniskis, where they were killed. There were two survivors: a
pharmacist by the name of Gandel and a 16 year old Jewish girl - Maryte (Miriam)
Schneider.

Plunge (Plungian)
Located between
Kaunas and Klaipeda (formerly Memel) and just a few miles from Telsai. This is the shtetl where we found Yossel Bunka, the Internationally recognized wood carver and the only Jew still living in the town. He showed us the mass grave of the 75 Jewish teenage girls who were murdered by the Nazis as well as the 18 hand carved living tree Holocaust statues that he personally carved and set in place as a memorial to those Jews who died here.
