Map Information
Below are various sites that you can explore to find locations of many of the shtetls in Ukraine. Most of these sites are for major towns, so I would suggest that you start at just www.mapquest.com
First; locate the general area and continue searching that area until you find your ancestral shtetl. On some computers, you may have to add the prefix: http:// before the link. This would depend upon what computer browser you are using and which site is being contacted. www.mapquest.com
An excellent site to find information about most European countries is at http://searcheurope.com and type in the name of the country you wish to research in the search field. This site is a great source to find information for almost every European country.
Global Gazetteer is a great web site. It is a directory of 2,880,532 of the world's cities and towns, sorted by country and linked to a map for each town. A tab separated list is available for each country. www.calle.com/world/

A fantastic source of Local Maps - MultiMap that helps you find the town of your choice and the surrounding towns are at http://www.multimap.com/index/UP1.htm
Once you have brought this page up, use the "Find" on your toolbar and type in the name of the town you are looking for. This site hasn't missed much as there are about 4,000 names of villages, cities and towns listed. If you print out a map, be sure to set your printer to 'Landscape'.

Library of Congress Map Collections - 1544 to 1996 - a huge collection. The American Memory Maps can give you the graphic view of settlements, cities, battles and territories at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/mapcoll23.html
TheLibrary of Congress Geography and Map Division (LCMD) Russian maps have a scale of 1:126,000 (1 cm = 1.26 km/1 inch = 2 miles) and have Cyrillic lettering that will indicate the historical Russian name that may or may not be the same as the Yiddish name that you know. The LCGMD Russian maps have two longitude scales with Polkova = 0 and Paris, France = 0. To convert from Polkova to Greenwich, add 31 degrees 20 minutes to the longitude value shown on the map.
Maps of Russia and the FSU (Former Soviet Union) Republics - be prepared to stay online for quite some time, if you want to see one of the largest collections of different types of maps.
